Episode 504

"You there. Yes, you, the tall green creature with all the tentacles. Where is your entrance visa?"

"Grothnarg. Wahnfogle!"

"That will not do! We are English. We play by the rules! Go back where you belong, or I shall be obliged to inform your mother."

Fearing Miss Perkin's retribution, the shambling green form without form sank back beneath the waves.

Indeed. Never, ever have any cause to get one's mother involved. Very Bad Things ensue.

"we've received reports that a giant monster is destroying Tokyo."
Is there even a story that doesn't involve the poor Tokyoites getting smashed by some huge kaiju from the sea?
(Disclaimer: I'm not criticising the story, I've burned through another 15 chapters today and this made me crack up)

Gotta love the “giant monster attacking Japan” trope. In the webcomic “MegaTokyo” the Tokyo police department has a “cataclysm division” for “scheduling, supervising, and cleaning up after various cataclysms, such as zombie infestations, alien invasions, and giant monster attacks.” Back in the 70’s, Neil Innes, who contributed a great deal to Monty Python, did an insightful and, IMHO highly underrated piece called “Godzilla’s Return”.

Blue reptile sleeping in cottonwool clouds
Trample the cities and trample the crowds
Red mammals wriggle in cosmetic mud
People who smell of the smoke and the blood
From the throats of the cities that burn
We are awaiting Godzilla's return

Disciples of horror, behold the messiah
The velvet arena, the hands that perspire
The eyes in the darkness that twinkle and shine
The image of love is doing just fine
Oh how they're willing to learn
We are awaiting Godzilla's return

Here comes a man with a long-punished look
Taking down names in a little black book
He spends his weekends digging holes in the ground
While his children decide to go up or go down
And they think they have nothing to fear
Nobody knows that Godzilla is here
The tide is out; please leave a message.

In order for urbanovore kaiju to have evolved, must there not have been urbs -- big cities --a hundred million years ago?

I think Godzilla is more supposed to be an allegory about the folly of rushing into the nuclear age without regard to the possible apocalyptic dangers, or perhaps a metaphor on mankind’s superficiality and materialism. Or maybe just a really bad but fun monster movie that we aren’t supposed to think too hard about. I like it on all levels. :D
