Little girls

Am I correct in believing that the innocent little girls in the bottom illustration on the 2018 Christmas Special are Emily and Clarice.with their winning steam engine?

That was certainly my impression, although I suspect a modicum of poetic license on the artist’s part. I believe the narrative describes a “toy” steam engine, while the one depicted appears to be capable of baling hay or hauling in a trawler. I envy their upbringing, although my own wasn’t so bad in that respect, having access to much tools and junk, and mind-expanding toys like Erector and Tinkertoy. I made my own electric motor and built and piloted several mongrel vehicles and vessels in my youth. However, a working steam engine would have been quite out of my range without considerable outside assistance.
The tide is out; please leave a message.

It was something of a challenge guessing what young girls' fashions might have looked like in Australia in 1916. Originally, I'd planned to have Clarice and Emily build a steam-powered bicycle, but I wasn't happy with any of the preliminary sketches. Then I thought, "Hmm, what happens if I leave out the bicycle?" :)

I'd also planned to have Emily operating the throttle, but this made things look too busy. Also, she wasn't tall enough to reach unless she was standing on a chair...
